About Migraines

A migraine is a severe headache that can be associated with symptoms including sensitivity to light and sound, dizziness, nausea, and many more. There are different types of migraines which carry different types of symptoms and durations. Causes

Researchers are still trying to identify the root cause of migraine. We have learned the a migraine attack is influenced by the entire body. Some common factors that can contribute to developing migraine include hormonal changes, family history (genetics), barometric pressure changes, and strong stimuli to the nose or eyes. Scientists believe that the brains of those with migraine have highly sensitive nerve cells that can detect even subtle changes in the body’s internal balance. This cues a cascade of events in your body leading up to a migraine attack, including the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). CGRP makes blood vessels in the lining of your brain dilate, which causes a pain response. Researchers have also found the level of serotonin in the brain decreases during a migraine attack, and this also contributes to pain. These two important brain chemicals are the target of many migraine medications we use today.
